Multi-Way Gas Detectors

Gas Monitors are essential PPE when undertaking confined space work

Improving the safety of workers operating in hazardous environments

Gas detectors are an essential part of your safe system of work (SSOW) when operating in enclosed or confined spaces, or any other areas with the foreseeable risk of a hazardous atmosphere. Multi-gas detectors and monitors are extremely flexible to cover multiple risks when entering unknown atmospheric conditions, and a typical off-the-shelf 4-way multi-gas monitor will detect: Oxygen (O2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S), and Lower Explosive Limit (LEL), so not only giving protection to the wearer from asphyxiates, and highly toxic atmospheres but also flammable and/or explosive conditions.

Most 4-way multi-gas monitors are intrinsically safe/ATEX approved and waterproof so are suitable for use in the vast majority of industries and conditions.

Changes in atmosperic conditions

Atmospheric conditions can change rapidly during planned or unplanned work activities, so personal gas monitors are the most popular option to protect workers within these environments.

The BW Gas Alert MicroClip XL is a popular and easy-to-use multi-gas detector with its one-button operation, large visual display, extended 18-hour battery runtime, rechargeable battery, and 6 monthly calibration intervals.

The primary driver for the use of gas detectors in the workplace is industry regulation and legislation. The importance of gas detection is highlighted in various EU Directives such as:

  • ATEX (“product”) 94/9/£C manufacture and distribution of equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres
  • Chemicals Agents Directive 98/24/EC - Protection of the health and safety of workers
  • Surface and underground mineral extracting industries 92/104/EEC
  • IOELV (Indicative Occupational Exposure Limit Values) – to set national limits
