Unstable Chemicals Found At Manchester University

Posted: 27/04/2018

A mass evacuation of a laboratory at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, part of the University of Manchester, was sparked after unstable chemicals were discovered on site.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the substances in question were being used as part of ongoing work but emergency services had to be called – including fire, police and specialist ambulance crews – as a precaution.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesman confirmed that the substances were being assessed but the incident was not terror related. And a North West Ambulance Service representative said there were four hazardous response teams on site, as well as an ambulance and senior clinician.

The GMP rep was quoted by the news source as saying: “At around 2.15pm on Wednesday 18 April 2018, police received a report that a quantity of unstable chemicals had been found in a laboratory within a university building on Princess Street in the city centre. Emergency services are in attendance and three buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.”

For certain industries, operational site projects and sectors, it’s vital that you have an emergency response team in place at certain times of the project or for a fixed period or permanently depending upon the level of site-based risks and hazards, helping you to deal with incidents similar to those highlighted above. You never know what’s going to happen or when so having a team of specialists on-site, who are well prepped in and able to respond in such an emergency, rescue and incident is definitely advisable.

But it can be very difficult to know where to begin, so if you’re struggling, get in touch with us here at HFR Solutions CIC and we’ll be able to help you from start to finish, either supplying a site-based stand-by team or train your incident response or crisis management teams to deliver site-based emergency response.
