Sprinklers 'Should Be Compulsory' For Warehouses

Posted: 28/07/2016

It should be made compulsory for warehouses that are larger than 20,000m2 to have fire sprinkler systems installed, with current guidance from the Department for Communities and Local Government only recommending that such sites in England and Wales to install these systems.

This is according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), which made the recommendation after average pay outs for commercial fires crossed the £25,000 barrier for the first time.

Director of General Insurance Policy with the ABI James Dalton observed that as the Great Fire of London showed, failure to make sure buildings can withstand fire can result in large-scale destruction. A fire that broke out recently at a Battersea industrial estate in South London that spread out across eight single storey units is indicative of just how disruptive and expensive warehouse fires can be.

"This year marks the 350th commemoration of the Great Fire of London and our approach to sprinklers remains stuck in the past. While the number of fires continues to fall, it is alarming that the average cost is rising so sharply," Mr Dalton said.

For help with emergency preparedness and response, call us today at HFR Solutions CIC. We can help you carry out a fire risk assessment so you can get a clearer picture of risk prevention for your company. The purpose of doing this is to reduce the chances of a fire, reduce the potential loss of life, reduce the risk to property and to comply with legislation like the Management of Health & Safety at Work and the Regulation Reform Fire Safety Order regulations.
