Thanks to heavy investment from DONG Energy, CS Wind has been commissioned to build a new offshore tower manufacturing facility in Scotland, which will give DONG access rights to towers for its own offshore wind farms.
This - the first facility in the UK that will be able to manufacture towers for turbines - will be able to produce a minimum of 50 towers a year, with 70 jobs safeguarded as a result.
Baroness Neville Rolfe, energy minister, welcomed the news, saying that offshore wind is still a key element for the UK to deliver its commitments where clean energy is concerned, with £52 billion invested in renewables in the country since 2010.
And Brent Cheshire, DONG's UK chairman, made further comments, saying: "Developing the supply chain in the UK is a strategic priority for DONG Energy. We plan on building more wind farms here, so this investment now will ultimately help us meet our targets in reliably delivering projects on time while bringing down the cost of offshore wind."
DONG has also just launched a new fund to make £3.9 million available for both community and environmental projects in coastal parts of Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and North Norfolk. It forms part of the community engagement programme for the company's Hornsea Project One and Race Bank offshore wind farms.
