Health And Safety Reminder For UK Potato Farmers

Posted: 24/09/2017

With the potato harvest set to take place over the next few months, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a reminder about health and safety for farmers in this particular industry.

The latest statistics from the organisation show that there have been 30 deaths on farms across the UK in the last 12 months – and incidents during potato harvest season are a common cause of fatal and serious injury. Risks include falls from height, being hit or run over by farm vehicles and entanglement with parts of machinery.

Inspectors will be visiting farms that grow, pick and process potatoes over the coming months to make sure risks are being controlled and that there are measures in place to protect workers and farmers alike.

Rick Brunt, head of agriculture with the HSE, said: “Farmers and their employees need to work together to make sure equipment is safe and work is well planned. This inspection initiative is about ensuring those participating in any harvesting activity remain safe and go home from their work healthy.”

There are lots of free resources available on the HSE website to help you manage the risks associated with potato harvesting, as well as more general farming activity. You could, for example, benefit from reading the leaflet on working safely with agricultural machinery, which covers hazardous areas on machines, control measures, checks to carry out before using machinery, and information on maintenance and repairs.
