BSC Calls For Brexit Schedule To Ensure Employee Wellbeing & Safety

Posted: 08/08/2016

The British Safety Council (BSC) has joined forces with the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management to urge the government to bring out a schedule for exit negotiations relating to the UK’s decision to leave the EU.

The worry is that in sectors that rely heavily on skilled labour from countries within the EU (including hospitality, construction, healthcare and facilities management), the potential is there for a skills gap to become apparent, because competent people will choose not to work here.

“Reduced availability of competent staff will increase the pressure on those that remain, causing fatigue and potential for an increase in accidents and poor mental health,” the organisations wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May.

As they observed, uncertainty relating to the work status of EU nationals in the future here in the UK is already proving to be a source of stress and anxiety, which could well have a negative impact on the mental health of some employees.

In relation to the EU referendum result on June 24th, the BSC stated that it may be necessary to review the country’s legislative and regulatory framework in order to ensure that current standards are maintained and the health and safety of workers in the UK are properly protected. It called on the government to make sure that any changes to legislation be considered carefully, saying that any decisions will have to be evidence-based.
