Humberside Fire & Rescue Service

The Way We Work

We operate and provide to the people within the Humberside area, a professional and skilled emergency response service 24 hours per day, every day of the year, as well as providing a range of other services and functions. We have a legal duty to provide a fire and rescue service that meets the needs of the local communities.

We are prepared to deal with a wide range of emergencies, from house fires and road traffic collisions to floods, chemical spills and even terrorist attacks. We are also responsible for the enforcement of fire prevention, petroleum and explosives legislation. We work with our communities to help keep people and property safe, providing a fire and rescue service for the people that live, work and visit the Humberside area.

Safer Communities

We believe the most effective way to save lives, reduce injuries and other losses through fire and other emergencies is to reduce the number of incidents that occur. To help us do this, we work closely with partner organisations and communities to develop emergency preparedness and response and deliver initiatives aimed at preventing incidents. We do this by focusing on reducing risk amongst people in our communities who are most vulnerable to fire and by raising awareness about fire risk.

To enable us to do this, we engage with other organisations to identify good practice to improve service delivery and community safety; we work with the local community, talking to other organisations to identify and reduce risks from fire and other hazards which affect peoples’ lives; we visit schools to deliver educational fire safety programmes to pupils aged between 9 and 10, as part of the national curriculum; and we have community safety teams to access and engage with those people most vulnerable to fire, providing information, education and where necessary, additional protection measures.

We carry out operational fire risk assessments on non-domestic properties and work to reduce the number of deliberate and nuisance fires started within the Humberside region.

We use the latest equipment and techniques when responding to an incident where people become trapped. Our firefighters are trained in immediate emergency care and work closely with other emergency services. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service has a statutory duty to train for and respond to incidents involving motor vehicles. The Service’s Extrication team develops the safest and quickest ways to rescue people involved in road traffic collisions. The team is considered to be among the best in the country in trauma care and casualty extrication.

We are trained and equipped to deal with a wide range of emergencies including animal rescues, spillages of dangerous chemicals, which endanger the life of the environment; local and wide area flooding, road traffic collisions, aircraft incidents and railway incidents. We provide a professional and skilled emergency response service 24 hours a day, every day of the year, as well as providing a range of other services throughout the Humberside area such as emergency preparedness and response.
